An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
In a particularly disgusting display, performance artist Mark McGowan and Yoko Ono ate a Pembroke Welsh Corgi on a live London Radio Broadcast. They claim to have done this because on a hunt Prince Phillip shot a fox and then beat it to death with a stick and they wanted to bring to attention the RSPCA (Royal Society For the Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals)not prosecuting him. However, the facts do not match the accusations entirely. Though the fox did have a gunshot wound there was no evidence of any other injuries consistant with the animal being beaten. The RSPCA found no fault in the fox’s killing and refused to prosecute. The only person who claims to have witnessed the beating of the fox refused to comment to the media. Ono andMcGowan, who has in the past, eaten a swan as part of his performing art show, ate the Corgi. The dog had died on a breeding farm and the breed was selected because it is the Queen’s favorite breed of dog.
I will be the first person to say that there should not be limits on art because to do so takes away all that art stands for. However, this is not art. McGowan and Ono showed a complete lack of maturity and dignity just to get back at someone for doing something they didn’t like. They had an eye for an eye mentality when commiting the act. It was like you killed a fox so I’ll eat this dog and show you. That’s obviously not very mature or intelligent. I don’t like hunting but I understand that it is a long held tradition in England and though things are starting to change with the ban of fox hunting but old habits die hard. There are other ways of showing one’s displeasure over the actions of a public figure without disturbing others and just being beligerant about things.
