“No society can possibly be built on a denial of individual freedom.”
South Africa has begun to look like a revolving door for many Zimbabweans who are attempting to escape starvation, poverty and lack of employment in thier homeland. Every day an estimated 3,000 “border jumpers” make it into South Africa in an attempt to start a new life and support themselves and send money back to thier families. However, many are captured by farmer vigilantes in the attempt to reach freedom. The farmers known as the green light police have taken up arms against the Zimbabweans in an attempt to monitor the borders and limit the damages to livestock, property and prevent violent crimes against South Africans. The farmers capture the offending people, bind them and later hand them over to the police for deportation.
The actions of the farmers have been contriversial and the police consider them binding people illegal. Though, little is done to stop it. The farmers aren’t really terrible people, in fact if the “jumper” gets away they don’t chase them down, and the Zimbabweans just want to live for the most part. In a way one can’t blame either party for thier behavior. The Zimbabweans just want to live and have a chance at a better life because if they go back they will most likely starve. The farmers want to preserve thier livestock and property as it is thier livelyhood. Perhaps in the future they could meet in the middle. Maybe the Zimbabweans could work for the farmers.
